SYMBIOSIS
Developed within the framework of the course "ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN III-V A: Re-Constructing the Soil" at the Department of Architecture, University of Thessaly, under the supervision of Professor Aspassia Kouzoupi, this project envisions an urban habitat in Volos, seeking to foster a harmonious symbiosis between humans, fauna, and flora, while restoring the ecosystem of the Krafsidonas River after the destructive impact of Storm Daniel in 2023.
The foundational idea of the design is the use of shallow depressions that capture water, redirecting it to the river or utilizing it for irrigation. A number of these systems are connected underground, while others function through overflow. Furthermore, specific trees and plants are introduced to bring back the insects and birds displaced from the region. To support the community, the design includes cultivation patches and play areas for the residents, as many lost their backyards and gardens after the storm, thus strengthening social bonds and community connection to the natural environment.
